“How far away are the armies that march toward you?” Thomas stared at the face in the helmet; there was something just out of reach about this mummified face, almost as if it waited.
“Days, four or five. They have crossed our southern borders.”
“I must study these writings,” Thomas said. “There is a great power here.
Leave the torches, I must have no distractions.”
“Will you be able to raise the guardians?” asked Tuloe.
“I don’t… Just leave.” Thomas straightened and peered into the dark.
They left and Thomas set about studying. He recognized the glyphs of Amon and Dell. Also, Kasha, Reen, and Terque. There were more. Xavier made sure to teach all of them, and as Thomas read, he knew what must be done. He knew what must perish to bring life to these ancient protectors.
Thomas sat down in the circle of writings on the cold granite floor where the deed must be performed. He sat and got sick thinking of what he must do. Then he studied the carvings again, and then again.
He made no mistake. Only one way existed to raise this army for this peaceful land and its people.
He climbed the stairs, leaving the cavern and its sleeping denizens. When he reached the door at the top, he found Christina snoring softly. Would she still be willing to stay with him, still encourage him to use his knowledge, if he used his knowledge to do what must be done?
He touched her cheek and she startled awake, putting her dagger to his throat. Seeing whom she threatened, she put the dagger away. “How long have I been asleep? Did you figure out what to do?”
“Yes,” Thomas replied. “I read the glyphs three times down in that tomb, there’s no mistaking.”
“So what is it,” she questioned further upon sensing his hesitation.
“I can’t do it, Christina.” To his own ears, he sounded as if he pleaded. He turned to the orange flame of the torch he still held.
She licked her lips. “Really, what is it you can’t do?”
“I must kill an innocent.”
Title: The Continuing Journeys of a Different Necromancer
Author: James J. Crofoot
Thomas now views his magic as less than good, but he must raise one more army. This one not of his creation though. For the first time he learns fear of the undead. More than ever, he longs to see the waters of the great sea to the west. Will he find peace there? Will Christina and he find a home with the people of the shores? Maybe. But, maybe he’ll have to fight magic darker than his own to keep his new home.
Maybe he’ll have to fight magic so dark that even a half demon witch fears it and must help.
