“…and there is a celebration planned. I overheard the Chef ordering large amounts of food and wine from the village. It seems the King might be holding another ball. I wonder who he’ll dance with this time.”
“Oh hush you, it won’t be with you.” The other barked with a laugh. I peeked around the edge of the seat to see who they might be, but their faces were unfamiliar to me. They were none of the maids I recognized from my own chambers.
“Perhaps it’ll be with the Princess. You know how they’ve been talking about the King and his daughter as of late.” The one servant wrinkled her nose at other as they tucked a few dirty rags into the pockets of their aprons. They were older, and their hair curled and frizzed from their sweat. They looked nothing like Myriah with her soft complexion and well-tended appearance. They seemed more like kitchen help than cleaning maids.
“Oh, I’ve seen the way the King dotes on his daughter now. The poor girl seems to not even notice or mind.”
“Perhaps she’s like her Mother; a witch.” The older one scoffed and shook her head. I wanted to interject, but I thought it best for me to keep my comments to myself. They didn’t know of my presence and I knew they’d stop chatting the moment I spoke up. I was offended, and felt angry at their cruel interjections. My Father was a good man and a good King. Was it truly wrong for him or myself to comfort each other during this sad time?
“You best watch yourself then,” the other said with a laugh. “Either way, the King promised to find a new wife. I’m sure we’ll be planning a wedding soon for whomever he chooses.” After a few more laughs and a bit more of polishing, the two servants left the library leaving me staring at my open, unread book. Had my Father found a new wife? Was he planning a celebration in her honor, or better yet - a wedding? These were questions I wanted to ask him as soon as I could. With a glance out the window, I waited for the sun to sink behind the horizon, for then it would be time to see him.
